Positive EV Betting Explained: How Sharp Bettors Profit Long Term

Key takeaways
- A +EV bet pays more than its true probability deserves. You find them by comparing a book’s price with a devigged sharp line.
- EV% = fair probability × decimal odds − 1. Most real +EV bets are 1% to 5%.
- +EV betting has variance. Even a solid 3.5% edge leaves you behind after 1,000 bets about one time in seven.
- Track closing line value, size bets with fractional Kelly, and expect sportsbooks to limit you eventually.
Most people bet on who they think will win. Sharp bettors bet on prices. They don’t need to know who will win; they need to know when a sportsbook is offering better odds than the outcome deserves. Do that consistently and the profit arrives over time, regardless of any single result.
That’s positive expected value betting, usually written +EV. This guide explains what it is, where the edge comes from, and how to do it in practice.
What expected value means
Expected value is the average result of a bet if you could place it many times.
A fair coin flip at +100 has zero EV. The same flip at +110 has positive EV:
The catch is that you don’t know the true probability of a sports outcome. The trick is to borrow the best available estimate: the price at a sharp sportsbook, with its margin removed.
Where the fair probability comes from
Sharp sportsbooks, most famously Pinnacle, accept big bets from winning players and adjust their lines when those players bet. Over time their prices become very accurate estimates of the true probability. We explain why in why Pinnacle’s line is the market’s best guess.
To use a sharp line:
- Take both sides of the sharp market, for example −102 / −108.
- Convert to implied probabilities: 50.50% and 51.92%. They add up to 102.42%.
- Remove the margin (devig). Proportionally, that’s 49.30% and 50.70%.
The 49.30% is your fair probability for the first side, or about +103 in fair odds. Our devig guide covers other methods.
Finding a +EV bet
Now compare with the US sportsbooks you hold. If one offers that first side at +110:
Every $100 you bet at that price is worth about $3.54 on average. The expected value calculator does this in one step.

Why US sportsbooks offer +EV prices
- Slow updates. When a sharp book moves, some US books lag behind for minutes.
- Different customers. Recreational books shade prices toward popular teams and overs. The other side can end up too long.
- Soft markets. Player props, alternate lines, and smaller leagues get less attention and are mispriced more often.
- Promotions. Boosts and specials can push a price past fair on purpose.
- Copied lines. Books that copy a market leader inherit its mistakes and its delays.
None of these gaps last long, and most are 1% to 5%. Anything much bigger is usually an error, a stale line about to be pulled, or a market that doesn’t match the sharp one.
Variance: the part nobody enjoys
+EV betting doesn’t guarantee profit on any bet, week, or month. Take a steady diet of $100 bets at +110 with a 3.5% edge:
| Bets | Expected profit | Typical range (±1 standard deviation) | Chance of being behind |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | +$353 | −$697 to +$1,403 | about 37% |
| 1,000 | +$3,530 | +$210 to +$6,850 | about 14% |
| 5,000 | +$17,650 | +$10,230 to +$25,070 | under 1% |
Even at 1,000 bets you’d be losing money roughly one time in seven, having done everything right. That’s why +EV bettors lean on two tools:
- Closing line value (CLV), which confirms your bets were good long before profit does. See closing line value explained.
- Sensible bet sizing, usually a fraction of the Kelly criterion, so a bad run doesn’t wipe you out.

- Open accounts at as many licensed books as your state allows. More books means more mispriced lines.
- Use an odds screen that includes a sharp reference. You need Pinnacle or another sharp book’s prices even though US bettors can’t legally bet there.
- Devig the sharp line and set a minimum EV threshold. Many bettors use 1% to 2% on main markets and 3% or more on props.
- Size with fractional Kelly, typically a quarter to half.
- Log every bet with the closing sharp line. Track CLV and results separately.
- Mix in normal-looking bets and avoid maxing out obscure props, to help your accounts last. See why sportsbooks limit winners.
+EV vs arbitrage vs promos
| Strategy | Outcome risk | Typical edge | Scales? | Limit speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Promo conversion | None (hedged) | 40% to 80% of promo value | Capped by promos | Moderate |
| Arbitrage | None | 0.5% to 3% of turnover | Moderate | Fast |
| +EV betting | Yes, variance | 1% to 5% per bet | Best | Moderate to fast |
Most successful bettors combine all three: promos for steady low-risk profit, +EV for long-run growth, and arbs when they appear. The bettors profiled in our Legends section built careers on the same principle, betting only when the price was wrong.
Finding +EV bets by hand means checking every line at every book against the sharp price, continuously. ProfitDuel’s EV Matcher does that comparison in real time and is included on its Elite plan; the Pro plan includes the Odds Screener for manual value betting.
Frequently asked questions
Is +EV betting the same as picking winners?
No. You don’t need an opinion on who wins. You need a price that’s better than the market’s own best estimate. A +EV bettor happily bets an underdog they expect to lose, as long as the price is too long.
How many bets does it take for +EV to show up in results?
Usually thousands. Results are noisy, which is why +EV bettors track closing line value. It confirms whether your bets are good far sooner than profit and loss does.
Can I do +EV betting without software?
You can, using the free odds screens some sites offer and our EV calculator, but it’s slow. +EV opportunities last minutes. Software that compares every book to sharp lines in real time finds far more of them.
Is +EV betting legal?
Yes. You’re simply placing bets at licensed sportsbooks at prices they choose to offer. Sportsbooks can limit your stakes if they decide you’re too sharp, but betting well isn’t against the law.
